Sallie is Cantonese born and brought up in Singapore. She had a successful career in marketing and public relations both in Singapore and Hong Kong in the 80s.

Having spent nearly eleven years in Hampshire, England, she now lives in Barcelona, Spain, Europe, with her husband and two children and runs her own Feng Shui consulting practice where apart from travelling around Spain, she travels regularly to Brussels, England, Italy, France, Hungary, Germany and Holland for her consultations. Sallie also founded a Feng Shui school to promote the teachings of authentic traditional Feng Shui.

She speaks fluent Cantonese being her mother tongue, Mandarin, English and Spanish. Her fellow colleagues within the practice are fluent in Catalan, Spanish and French.

I have a large extended family who still lives in Singapore and whom I see as often as I can. My mother is the true matriarch of the family and throughout my younger years exerted a strong influence over me particularly with respect to the importance of family, culture and tradition. From the earliest times since I can remember, Feng Shui was an integral part of our everyday life as indeed it still is.

My mother understood that, as in the natural world, we can live in perfect grace, harmony and truth by recognising and accepting the changes of life. Her philosophy was: to take all things good and bad as they come with grace, count our blessings when good things happen and respond but not react to the bad things that come our way. My mother believed that nature exists in a cycle of yin and yang. In life, there are ups and downs, good and bad moments; embrace the good with gratitude but let the bad pass, learn the lesson from it, be strong and let it go and count your blessings.

This philosophy kept her strong bringing up seven children on her own after my father passed away when we were young (I was only 11). My mother also applied concepts of Feng Shui to avoid misfortune and help maintain a balanced spatial and temporal harmony in our lives. Basic to her belief is the conviction that one must not wait passively for one's share of good fortune, but must actively strive to attain optimal spatial and temporal relations. With seven children to raise in a small apartment in a city, it was not easy to follow the Feng Shui principles laid out in most formulae. As a result, the Four Pillars of Destiny ('Ba Zi') and Xuan Kong system of Feng Shui together with the Almanac were central to her quest for spatial harmony.

Although I was brought up in a family that was imbued with the philosophy of Feng Shui, I never considered taking it up professionally until a chance meeting with my very benevolent "Shi Fu" (teacher and mentor) opened my eyes to the practical importance of my mother's teaching and what Feng Shui could really achieve particularly when applied in a non-domestic context. I was working in Hong Kong and chanced upon two Classical Feng Shui Masters in the course of my work. I never looked back from that experience."

As well as the training she received from her mother, Sallie was a pupil to old Master Si in Hong Kong (1988) and studied works by Master Bak Chiok Hung who conducted courses and wrote many books based on the scholarly works of ancient masters such as Shen Si, Chiang Da Hong, Chiang Chong San to name a few. The knowledge she attained from these masters provided her with a profound insight and sound understanding of this ancient philosophy.

Sallie explains, "Although I have studied many old Feng Shui texts which have deepened my knowledge of the history and development of Feng Shui, I think it is equally important to know how to interpret and apply this philosophy to the needs of modern living.

In classical authentic Feng Shui, there is a strong emphasis on the need to site your dwelling well as at the time of construction although, sadly, this is almost impossible to achieve in modern day living."

With this in mind, Sallie attended Grand Master Raymond Lo's and Lillian Too's Professional Consultants Program to gain an insight on how Feng Shui can be applied effectively to modern day living with all its inevitable constraints. She has also attended many seminars in Europe primarily to understand how Feng Shui is perceived and viewed in the western minds.

"I practise Feng Shui in everything the family does and, as a family, we all believe in its potency if observed and practised correctly.

For ten years we have been living in the hills of Alt Penedès just 50km outside of Barcelona city, Spain. Feng Shui in Barcelona was relatively unknown and it is only now that it is becoming more understood and accepted.

The Alt Penedès, which is famous for its superb wines and cava, is an area where working on and with the land has been and still is a way of life. Although possibly unaware of Feng Shui as a philosophy, through their closeness to the land, the local people are already practising Feng Shui on a very intuitive level and this can be seen in the way they sited the old masias (farm houses).

The most common misconception of Feng Shui is that Feng Shui can cure every problem. I have consultations where the client's objective is to work less hours, have more money and more time to spend on leisure activities. Feng Shui cannot do this and it is a mistake to think it is some kind of magic wand in the sense of, I have had a Feng Shui analysis so I can just sit back and life will be terrific.

The crucial point is that Feng Shui is about balance and how to tap into the auspicious qi and how to avoid negative qi. If the energy in your surrounding living space is in harmony, the energy surrounding you will heighten your performance thus making you feel more positive, focussed and determined. Your health will be better and your perception will be sharper which in turn will enable you to see opportunities when they present themselves.

In other words, there is no direct link between Feng Shui and the attainment of your objectives - Feng Shui deals with the understanding of your environment and the energies that affect you thereby enabling you to maximise the opportunities that arise.

Feng Shui to me is not just a question of faith. It is a way of life."
